FAQ & System Requirements

Everything you need to know about how Honest Owl works, what it costs, and what it needs to run.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Honest Owl?

Honest Owl is a free, local AI study app for Windows. It turns your Canvas assignments — via an optional calendar sync — and its own built-in K-12 study guide catalog into flashcards, quizzes, and study guides, without doing the work for you.

Can I use Honest Owl without an internet connection?

Yes. Once you've downloaded an AI model and pulled in your Canvas assignments or Honest Owl's built-in study guides, the app works completely offline. An internet connection is only needed for the initial download and to refresh your Canvas calendar feed.

How does Honest Owl protect student data privacy?

Honest Owl runs its AI model locally on your own computer. Your chats, quiz scores, and badges are stored only on your device and are never uploaded, exported, or sent to a cloud server.

How does Honest Owl sync with Canvas, and do I need a Canvas account?

Honest Owl can pull your Canvas calendar (iCal) feed to read upcoming assignment titles, descriptions, and due dates, and turn them into study material. This is optional — a Canvas account is not required, since Honest Owl also includes its own built-in K-12 study guide catalog.

Is Honest Owl free to use?

Yes. Honest Owl is completely free to download and use, with no subscription and no account required. Donations are optional.

What are the system requirements to run Honest Owl?

Honest Owl requires Windows 10 (version 2004 or later) or Windows 11, 64-bit. It needs 4 GB of RAM minimum (8 GB recommended for larger AI models) and under 3 GB of disk space per downloaded model. A GPU is optional.

Does Honest Owl require a graphics card (GPU)?

No. Honest Owl runs on your computer's CPU by default. If you have a supported NVIDIA GPU, it automatically uses it (CUDA 12) for faster responses, and falls back to the CPU if none is found.

What kinds of quiz questions does Honest Owl generate?

Honest Owl generates multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, and short-answer quiz questions from your assignments or study guides, and gives immediate feedback on each answer.
